Why Turkey Is Europe’s 4th Most Visited Country

I read an interesting statistic recently. It’s surprising but I’m not exactly shocked. It had to do with the most visited countries in Europe. Unsurprising were the top three – France with 102 million foreign visitors last year, Spain with 93.76 million, and Italy with 66.25 million foreign visitors according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization. What is surprising is the country that’s the 4th most visited – Turkey with 60.58 million foreign visitors last year!

That means Turkey is more popular than vacation destinations like the U.K., Greece, and Portugal which might more readily come to mind at first. In fact, Turkey is one of the fastest-growing tourism markets globally, not just in Europe.

Maybe you’re asking the question: Is Turkey part of Europe? Read my blog here on that subject.

Now let’s get back to the question of why Turkey is one of the fastest growing tourism markets. Turkey’s rapid tourism growth isn’t accidental. It’s the result of several strategic, geographic, and economic factors working together.

A Huge Variety of Attractions

Turkey has a huge variety of attractions in one country offering multiple world-class tourism types in a compact area such as:

  • Cultural & historical tourism – Turkey has 21 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 84 Tentative Sites, more than 112,000 registered archaeological sites, over 21,000 registered cultural monuments, and more than 400 museums.
  • Beach tourism – According to the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) 2024 results, Turkey ranks 3rd in the world for the total number of Blue Flag beaches with 567 of its beaches having earned that prestigious designation. Turkey also has 27 Blue Flag marinas.
  • Nature tourism – Turkey offers more than 1,000 officially recognized nature-tourism sites ranging from mountains and national parks to wetlands, canyons, lakes, caves, waterfalls, natural wonders and protected coastal zones. Some of the most well-known attractions are Cappadocia, Pamukkale, and Mount Ararat.
  • Wellness & all-inclusive resorts – Turkey’s combination of warm climate, geothermal resources, turquoise coastline, and affordability has made it a top global wellness and resort destination.
  • Religious tourism – Turkey has one of the highest concentrations of religious sites in the world, spanning Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and pre-Abrahamic ancient religions. Because the country has 12,000+ years of continuous settlement the count is over 22,000 religious and sacred sites making Turkey one of the globally leading destinations for religious tourism and pilgrimage.
  • Wintertime attractions – Turkey is a surprisingly rich winter destination, offering everything from snowy mountains to ancient cities with fewer crowds, warm coastal escapes, and unique winter activities you can’t find elsewhere. Turkey has multiple modern ski resorts with good snow quality and affordable prices close to major cities. Uludağ, in Bursa, is Turkey’s most famous ski resort. It’s ideal for families, beginners, and nightlife lovers. Erciyes, in Kayseri, is a modern, high altitude ski resort with long slopes making it especially great for intermediate to advanced skiers. Palandöken, in Erzurum, had one of Europe’s longest & steepest runs. It enjoys extremely reliable snow making it perfect for pros and serious skiers.

This diversity attracts many segments of travelers – budget, luxury, families, history lovers, resort vacationers, and digital nomads.

Affordability and Exchange Rate

Turkey has very competitive prices compared to Western Europe for such things as accommodations, food, and domestic air travel. In addition, a favorable exchange rate (especially for Americans and Europeans) has made Turkey increasingly attractive to international tourists.

A Strategic Location

As for location, Turkey sits at one of the world’s most important crossroads. 48 major national capitals and regional hub cities lie within a 2.5-hour flight of Istanbul. This is one of the reasons Istanbul is such a powerful aviation and economic hub.

Modern Infrastructure and Connectivity

Though designated as a developing country, Turkey has heavily invested in infrastructure. The country has expanded coastal resort zones, improved its highways and intercity travel, funded cultural heritage restoration and modernized its airports. In the prestigious “Top 10 International Airports in the World” survey conducted by world-renowned travel magazine Travel and Leisure; Istanbul Airport claimed the top spot for the second consecutive year in 2025. And Turkish Airlines serves more than 345 destinations across 129 countries, making it the airline with the widest geographical coverage in the world.

Food: A Major Reason People Visit Turkey

Finally, no discussion about Turkey would be complete without the subject of food. Turkey is now recognized as a major global food-tourism destination, and many travelers visit specifically for the cuisine. Some come just for Istanbul’s food scene, others for regional specialties, street food, fine dining, or culinary history. Turkish cuisine is considered one of the top 3 world cuisines historically (along with French and Chinese). It’s a blend of Ottoman, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Balkan, Central Asian, and Anatolian influences. It’s also rich in regional diversity; every province has its own iconic dishes. In fact, Turkey has UNESCO-recognized food cultures. And Turkey now has 15 Michelin-star restaurants across three regions – Istanbul, Izmir, and Bodrum.

So… Should We Really Be Surprised?

Now, what was I saying earlier about being surprised that Turkey is the 4th most visited European destination? After concluding my research on the subject, I guess I’m surprised Turkey isn’t #1! Maybe next year.
