Liverpool FC and Turkish Airlines: Turkey’s Global Rise

Liverpool FC stadium

Liverpool FC’s new Turkish Airlines partnership is not only a football sponsorship. From 1 June 2027, Turkish Airlines will become Liverpool FC’s main club partner, with the airline’s branding appearing on the front of the men’s, women’s and Academy match shirts from the 2027-28 season.

For Liverpool, it is the first change of main club partner in 17 years. For Turkish Airlines, it is another major step onto one of the most watched stages in world sport. For Turkey, it is a reminder of how far the country’s international presence has grown through aviation, tourism, trade, sport and global connectivity.

The reported value makes the story even bigger. Although Liverpool did not disclose the official financial terms, reports have placed the five-year agreement above £300 million, or more than £60 million per season. That would put the Turkish Airlines Liverpool sponsorship among the most valuable front-of-shirt deals in Premier League history.

For anyone watching Turkey from an investment perspective, this is worth looking at properly. A shirt sponsor does not change Turkey’s investment outlook by itself, but it does say something about the direction Turkey is travelling in.

Why This Partnership Feels Bigger Than Football

Football shirts are global advertising space. A Liverpool shirt is seen in the UK, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, the United States and Latin America. It is worn by fans, shown on television, shared on social media and repeated across sports news every week of the season.

Turkish Airlines choosing Liverpool is not random. Liverpool is one of the most recognised football clubs in the world, while Turkish Airlines operates one of aviation’s broadest international networks. The brand fit is clear: one club with a worldwide supporter base, one airline built around connecting countries through Istanbul.

The Istanbul connection also carries history. Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League final win in Istanbul remains one of the most famous nights in the club’s modern story. Turkish Airlines now steps into Liverpool’s commercial history more than two decades after Istanbul became part of Liverpool folklore.

For Turkey, the benefit is wider than brand exposure. Every Liverpool match after 2027 will place Turkish Airlines, and indirectly Istanbul, in front of millions of fans. That matters for tourism, business travel, investment awareness and the country’s image as a well-connected international base.

Turkish Airlines Has Become a Global Brand

Turkish Airlines is no longer simply Turkey’s national carrier. It is one of the country’s most successful global brands. The airline has built its identity around flying to more countries than any other airline, using Istanbul as a bridge between Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas.

According to Turkish Airlines’ 2025 investor presentation, the airline served 356 destinations in 132 countries and carried 92.6 million passengers during the year. Those numbers explain why the Liverpool deal makes sense. Turkish Airlines is not buying visibility in one market. It is buying a platform that reflects the scale of its own network.

This follows a longer sports strategy. Turkish Airlines has already been associated with major sports properties, including the UEFA Champions League and EuroLeague basketball. The Liverpool deal is another step in that direction, but it may be the most visible to a British and wider football audience.

The company is also closely linked to Turkey’s national strategy. The Türkiye Wealth Fund owns 49.12% of Turkish Airlines, meaning the airline sits within the country’s wider economic and strategic portfolio. When Turkish Airlines appears on the Liverpool shirt, it is not only promoting flights. It is also projecting a Turkish brand at enormous international scale.

Istanbul Airport Is the Real Engine Behind the Deal

The Liverpool partnership only works because Turkish Airlines has a hub capable of supporting the brand. Istanbul Airport handled 84.4 million passengers in 2025, making it one of the busiest airports in the world. Airports Council International ranked it eighth globally by total passenger traffic in 2025, with a 5.5% increase compared with the previous year.

Istanbul is not only a destination. It is a major transfer point, a meeting place, a business base and a natural stop between continents. Travellers from Manchester, London, Birmingham or Edinburgh can fly into Istanbul and connect onwards to Asia, the Gulf, Africa or domestic Turkish destinations.

This is important for investors too. Cross-border real estate markets depend on access. A second home, retirement base or investment property becomes much more attractive when owners can reach it easily. Bodrum, Istanbul and other Turkish markets benefit from the country’s aviation network, especially when attention is repeatedly drawn back to Turkey through brands such as Turkish Airlines.

The practical point is simple. Turkey’s connectivity is not a marketing phrase. It is visible in airport numbers, route networks and major international partnerships.

Why This Supports Turkey’s Investment Case

Turkey’s location has always been one of its strongest assets. According to official investment promotion data, Turkey has access to 1.3 billion people and a 35 trillion USD market across Europe, MENA and Central Asia within a four-hour flight radius. That is the same strategic logic behind Istanbul Airport, Turkish Airlines and the country’s growing role as a regional business base.

The Liverpool deal fits that neatly. A football club with worldwide support wants sponsors that can speak to fans across many markets. Turkish Airlines wants visibility that matches its international network. The wider effect is to present Turkey not only as a holiday destination, but as a serious centre for travel, trade, tourism, healthcare and investment.

Tourism already shows this shift. Turkey recorded a total tourism income of 65.23 billion USD in 2025, with almost 64 million visitors. That is not a small resort economy. It is a major international tourism market.

People first discover Turkey through a holiday, a football final, a flight connection, a medical trip, a business visit or a friend who bought there. Then they begin looking at Istanbul apartments, Bodrum villas, residence permits, citizenship rules, tax, inheritance, healthcare and lifestyle.

What It Means for Istanbul

Istanbul is one of the clearest beneficiaries. Turkish Airlines and Istanbul Airport strengthen the city’s position as a major international hub. That supports business districts, branded residences, serviced apartments, urban regeneration areas, healthcare tourism, international schools and rental demand.

For investors, Istanbul’s attraction is its depth. It is not a seasonal market built only around holidays. It is a city of business, transport, education, culture and long-term residential demand.

The Liverpool partnership does not directly raise Istanbul property prices. That would be too simplistic. But it does strengthen the international profile of the airline and the city behind it.

For buyers considering Istanbul property, this matters in practical terms. A connected city is easier to visit, easier to rent and easier to hold long term. Regular exposure through Turkish Airlines also keeps Istanbul familiar to travellers, businesses and potential investors.

The Bigger Picture for Investors in Turkey

The most interesting part of the Liverpool and Turkish Airlines announcement is not the shirt. It is the direction behind it. The figures already tell that story: world-scale airport traffic, a vast airline network, record tourism income and a sponsorship capable of putting a Turkish brand in front of audiences worldwide.

For investors, the significance is not the sponsorship itself, but the conditions around it. International investors rarely choose a country for one reason. Buyers look at access, lifestyle, value, long-term confidence and ease of travel. Turkey is improving its case in many of those areas.

The Liverpool deal is a symbolic moment because it places a Turkish brand on one of football’s most famous shirts. More importantly, it reflects the scale at which Turkish companies and infrastructure now operate internationally.

Our View on the Liverpool Turkish Airlines Deal

For James and Aysegul, the lesson is not that a football sponsorship should drive a property purchase. The lesson is that Turkey’s international profile continues to grow through the things serious buyers care about: aviation, access, tourism, infrastructure, hospitality and global recognition. Turkish Airlines on the Liverpool shirt is a commercial deal, but it also reflects a country with wider reach, stronger visibility and deeper links to the world.
